Data Storytelling Challenge | Inspire. Analyze. Transform.

Use data storytelling to tackle global challenges inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Uncover insights, solve real-world problems, and make an impact through compelling data narratives!

What is the Contest About?

  • Contest Structure : Participants select a social issue from from one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, find relevant dataset, analyze the data and create a compelling story. 
  • Skills Emphasized: Data interpretation and storytelling.
  • Deliverable: Create and submit an infographic poster or an equivalent 4-5 Power Point slides. Include a written report of maximum of 1500 words.

Who Can Participate?

✅ High school students (Grades 9-12).
✅ Anyone interested in understanding and solving real-world challenges through data.
✅ Students with analytical skills to conduct the required analysis and gain hands-on experience.

How to Participate?

  • Sign up individually or as a team of up to 2 members.
  • Note: Teams share cash prizes equally.
  • Pick one of the four UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Define a key question related to the chosen goal.
  • Identify public datasets that provide insights into the problem.
  • Perform data analysis to explore trends and findings.
  • Develop an engaging narrative based on your insights.
  • Create infographics or visualizations 
  • Format your final report as per the submission guidelines below.
  • Submit your entry via the form on this page.

What to Submit?

Submission

Follow these key sections to structure your submission:
1️⃣ Problem & Relevance – Explain the issue and its significance.
2️⃣ Dataset Description – Mention sources and provide appropriate citations.
3️⃣ Exploration Question(s) – Define the key question(s) guiding your analysis.
4️⃣ Analysis & Insights – Outline your methods, findings, and conclusions.
5️⃣ Key Takeaways – Highlight the most important insights.
6️⃣ References – List all datasets and research materials used.

Guidelines

1️⃣ Use English, standard letter size (8.5” x 11”), with 1-inch margins.
2️⃣ Choose Arial or Times New Roman (11 pt) font.
3️⃣ Create and submit an infographic poster or an equivalent 4-5 Power Point slides. Include a written report with a maximum of 1500 words. 

How Will You Be Evaluated?

Your submission will be reviewed by industry and academic judges based on:
Relevance: How well the problem connects to the UN Sustainable Development Goal.
Data Quality: Use of credible, public dataset(s).
Analysis: Depth and accuracy of data exploration.
Storytelling: Clarity, impact, and creativity in explaining findings.
Presentation: Quality of writing and visual representation.

What is the Contest Prize?

  • 1st Prize: $300 and admission to a DIYA Summer program
  • Second Prize: $200
  • Honorable Mentions: Recognition on the DIYA website.
  • Earn bragging rights for your exceptional work.

You can register a team with up to two participants. Enter your team name and add the participants’ name, grade and school information

Yes. You can add a second participant at any time before the submission deadline by sending an email to [email protected]

Yes. You can participate as a team of one.

Yes, anyone in grade 9 to 12 from high schools around the world can participate. For students outside US, we may require additional verification for applying the scholarship towards an international college.

You will not be able to update them once you make the submission. Please take time until the submission deadline and submit the final report and relevant material. 

Results will be announced by the end of May.

Award winners will be announced on the website and you will be notified via email. We will also send notifications of the award winners to their schools.
